Preliminary Investigation And Evaluation

Evaluation

Strengths

In this preliminary video I feel that we did a good job in many ways to make the video have the best outcome. One strength of the video is the title scene and how you see the transition of it slide across the screen. It flows very well and is effective to get the name of the film and who it is produced by across to the audience. Also I think how we edited the titles together was very successful because we tried to make it smooth and make it easy to watch. Which I feel we did by having the black background and the white sliding titles; the black background and the white title contrasted very well to stand out and make sure that it was seen.
A second strength in our video was how we used a different range of camera shots from close ups to extreme long shots. But the shot I feel worked the best was the CCTV shot. This shot made the audience tense because they realised that the main character was being watched and something serious was now going to happen. This camera changes the mood of the film very quickly and I think that it was a good way to make the film serious.

Weaknesses And Improvements

A problem we had with the film was the sound and especially the gun shots that we included. We had great trouble with the gunshots because we could not find any that would fit into the actions that Ryan made. And when we finally found a gun it did not fit into Ryan's actions, this was hard because we could not find another gun to put into the production in its place. Instead we had to leave it in the production even though it did not fit in properly. If I were to do it again I would of left myself with more time on the gun section instead of another area. I would then have found a gun shot which fitted better into the actions of Ryan and I would have made sure that it sounded realistic.
The second main problem we had was when we did the close ups of Ryan's face and then the next shot to him shooting Callum. Here in this section the transition from Ryan's face to him shooting was not very smooth and this was because there was a shift of the body from when we took different shots around the room. So after the close up of Ryan's face you see a slight jump and he is in a different position. This is not that noticeable but when you are looking closely and in depth you can see this fault in the filming. If I were to change this I would go back and film it again to make sure it is all lined up.

What I have Learnt

While making this preliminary investigation I have learnt many new things and improved on other aspects that are needed in making a movie. I have learnt the basics on I-movie, which will be very helpful when making my actual opening to a thriller. This will probably be the most useful thing I have learnt because I will need this skill to make my thriller opening flow and have good editing.
Another skill I have learnt is to use the correct filming techniques. These were important to make my preliminary work well. One of the most important techniques was to stick to the 180 degree rule because I have learnt if you do not follow this rule your audience will become confused and lost when watching. That is the worst thing for the audience and it can put them off the film. So sticking to this rule kept my video looking professional and made it easy for the audience to understand.
