No Country For Old Men Analysis

These are images that I will be analysing from the neo-Western thriller movie ‘No Country For Old Men’ which is a movie made in the year 2007 based on the Cormac McCarthy novel of the same name. It is set in the desert landscape of 1980 West Texas and tells the story of an ordinary man who by chance comes across a fortune that is not his, and then an ensuing cat and mouse drama begins for the money. The main themes in this movie are fate, conscience, circumstance, action and adventure.
In this image you see the villain in a mid shot. Here he is surrounded by darkness which makes it hard to see his face. The darkness surrounding him could connote that he has evil ways about him and that he has a dark mind. The cage in front of the villain could signify that he belongs behind a cage because he is dangerous. Having his face hidden by the cage and the darkness of the car leaves the audience asking a lot of questions.

This image shows a struggle between a police officer and the main villain in the film. This is the first time you clearly see the villains face in the shot. This added to the tension previously because you had not seen his face and didn’t know how he would look. This mid shot of the officer and the villain, it is quite disturbing for the audience and strikes fear into them because of the evil looking face the villain expresses while the officer helplessly dies. This shot is a good way to show the intensity of the moment.

Here in this close up shot of the villain’s hands you can see where the handcuffs have been pulled against his wrists, this was because he strangled the police officer with them. This close up works effectively in showing how much the killer struggled in killing the officer; you can see this by looking at his bleeding wrists. Here he is cleaning the handcuffs and washing the blood away from his wrists, this makes you think about the officers death. and how the villain is crazy.

Characters

This actor is playing a teenage white male that goes to church every Sunday and is happy to do so. He is the victim in this opening to the film. He is only a minor character and would only have a small roll in the whole film. After this opening scene the colour would change from black and white into a colour film. This is because we wanted to make it seem that it was back in the past. The boy is a typical smart Christian boy. Dressed in a shirt and tie with a plain jumper. With the speaking over the top you think that the boy is the evil man but as the story unfolds you realise he is an innocent boy and not evil. We are using a young boy rather than an adult because In the bible extract it says ‘the finder of the lost children’.
This character is a priest he has a grudge with something that we find out late on in the film. We chose this character because we watched a film in a similar genre called the Da Vinci Code and we saw the character Silas. He inspired us to make a similar character.
The roll of this character Is to make the audience tense as they know he is there but the boy doesn't we want the audience to dislike this character and fear him. We are using him as the evil one who thinks he is doing well in the eyes of his God but actually isn't. He fits our religious thriller, as he is a priest.

Costume

We borrowed the hooded robe from a small local costume company and they were all to happy to help us. We have used this for the priest as it was quite mysterious and made my family jump when i walked in my house with it on with it on.
This is the jumper we chose to use in our thriller because it isn't as in your face as the other jumpers and we new the opening would be in grey scale and this was better aesthetically than the other ones with this affect.
This was a good jumper, we thought, if our opening wasn't going to be black and white because it was a nice jumper to look at.
We didn't think this jumper was suitable as it reminded us of a golfing jumper and that isn't the look that we wanted. Also in grey scale the black was way to dark and it looked strange.
